Little strays

Description

This year's April Fools is fun. CATS! YAY! So here I am doing my little part.

The two kittens on this photo have a small story. A few years ago we had a litter of stray cats trying to survive in our neighborhood. They were feral, very shy, did not like people and were pretty much impossible to approach.

The day after first spotting them, a Sunday, my step dad woke me up and said "Cats in the trash can!" I was all "Wha?"
Turned out two of the feral kittens had fallen into our recently emptied trash can, probably lured in by whatever scraps remained on the bottom, and they couldn't climb out. I've done animal care and rescue and I know my way around wild animals, and I still had an empty cage, so I caught them, put them inside, gave them food and water and called the animal ambulance who picked them up later in the day and took them to a shelter. What happened with them after that I don't know, I hope they were young enough that they could be rehabilitated and put up for adoption.

Either, this is one of the photos I made while they were in the cage. The white one looked so frightened on all the photos, all droopy ears and sad eyes. I really hope they found a home.

Sadly, most likely euthanized. Kittens usually a great deal are, and are usually only available for rescue groups (not public adoption), but depends on the shelter as well and location, and how many animals they have at the shelter at the time, amongst other strict stipulations. For example, California has a law that allows stray animals to be claimed for up to 5 days (they're supposed to follow this anyway) before they are euthanized to give pet owners a chance to claim their lost animal. There are always too many animals at the shelter =(. Trap and release is the neutering/spaying of stray cats and releasing them back to where they were originally. One of the ears is tipped/cut under anesthesia to let other rescue groups and animal control know that the cat is part of a T&R program and is fixed. Loss of a chunk of ear tip seems brutal but it is necessary to help identify and save lives. It's become a worldwide phenomenon and is spreading. What you could do is check to see if your area has a local T&R program, and alert them to any other cats in the area. They will have the cats taken away to be fixed and then returned to be released, and maybe other neighbors can get involved to help. It's a very humane movement =).
