Our house caught fire last night

Important!

First of all, no one got hurt but I'm still pretty shaken up. It only happened a few hours ago.

I woke up around 4:45 in the morning because I heard a loud bang. At first I thought there had been an accident or something, because shortly after I heard a man yell. Thirty seconds or so later I heard a second bang, louder this time and hard enough my bed shook (I sleep in the attic). I got up and looked out of the window and the only odd thing I saw was a guy standing across the street. He saw me looking and yelled something like "someone is watching out of the window".

I jumped away, thinking that they had something to do with whatever had caused the loud bangs. Ten seconds or so later I turned to face the curtains again and I saw this bright glow; the flames had already reached the roof.

I woke up my friend in a panic (birthday sleepover) and ran downstairs yelling that there was a fire. My brother, mother and step dad were already awake and the police and everything had already been called. I dunno... it's kinda a blur, I was panicking and all I could think about were my chinchillas, rabbit and parakeet who were still in my room.

The police told us to grab clothes and leave the house immediately. I ignored it, ran upstairs and grabbed extra cages and stuffed the chinnies and my bunny inside. I carried everyone downstairs and outside with the help of my friend and mother. Ran back up to grab my wallet and everything, all the while fearing that the roof would come down on top of me, and ran outside again: it was snowing and I was only wearing socks and my thin pajamas but at that point I was so freaked out I didn't even notice the cold.

My uncle was there and he brought us to his home one block away.

I already had a talk to the police about what I had seen and heard and they're coming by again later today. What they think is that someone set fire to the car of the neighbors - the two bangs I heard were probably the tires and the engine exploding. It completely burned out and our entire garage with everything in it is gone. Fortunately the damage is only on the outside of our house aside from one hole in my roof, but the neighbors have lots of interior damage as well. But at least no one got hurt.

So... yeah. That's what happened. I'm still trying to let it all sink in. Stuff like this usually only happens to other people, or in movies... it's so weird to think that it happened here, to me and my family.
I mean, what the hell is wrong with you if you just set fire to someone's car for shits and giggles?!

It's fucked up.

Wow, that's terrifying. I'm really glad you're alright and no one got hurt. Hope they find the asshole who thought setting things on fire would be a good idea, if that's what happened. :/

No worries ^-^ Alles is nu gesloopt en schoongemaakt dus ze kunnen binnenkort beginnen met het opnieuw opbouwen van de carports. Ben ik wel excited voor ^^

I'm just going to go out on a limb here but I don't think this was for 'fun.' The reaction to you seeing sounds more like this was planned and you were a witness, the unknown factor they weren't expecting. Also since he yelled that implies there are more parties than one person involved only further implying this was a 'job' where one person set the car on fire and the other was the lookout.

I congratulate your family and you on your quick thinking and from the looks of it, brilliant reaction times. I hope the police's investigation goes well and they find the perpetrators and their reason for targeting your neighbors.

Perhaps. While I was at my uncle's place, he went back to the scene to tell the police that I had seen that guy. An officer contacted me shortly after to ask me to explain what I had seen and heard and to describe the man. After I did, he told me that a man matching the description had come to the police station, telling them that he was trying to wake everyone up because he had seen the fire, and that that was why he reacted like that when he saw me look through the curtains (my first impression was that he was indeed warning someone that I had spotted them).

Even so, I think it's fishy. He was there during the two bangs, he was there when the car exploded because I heard him yell right after the first bang, and saw him standing outside after the second. And if he really didn't do it, then he must have seen who did, but the police made no mention of this when I talked to them.

Anyway, the car has been taken away for research. We still don't know for certain if someone set fire to it as likely as that is, or if something sparked on it's own.

I really don't understand why anyone would target my neighbors; they're an old couple who spend their days doing volunteer work. :/

Either way, I'll keep this journal updated once I know more.

Oh no I'm so glad you're okay and everyone got out alright including your pets!
House fires are one of my worse fears...I can't imagine this actually happening. Hopefully things will be fixed up without much issue. *hugs* :<
